Volunteer Provided Services
Newton at Home volunteers provide a wide variety of free services to our members. All volunteers are interviewed, reference checked and criminal background checked. Drivers must show insurance coverage, registration and a valid driver’s license. All volunteers attend a comprehensive NAH training session before they are assigned to serve members.
The following is a list of services provided by Newton at Home volunteers. Others may be available as well. Do not be afraid to ask if you do not see the service you need on the list.
Transportation to and from:
- Medical appointments
- Social,cultural, & educational events
- Library and Newton City Hall
- Supermarket and other stores
- Hair salon/barber
- Logan Airport

Health and Wellness
- Seminars on nutrition, exercise, fall prevention
- Exercise and fitness classes, yoga, balance and walking groups
- Advocacy to help navigate complex health care visits
- Daily telephone check-ins; medical escorts
- Medical escorts: Accompany you to medical appointments and take notes

Convenience Services
- Prescription,dry cleaning pick up
- Refrigerator stocking before you return from a trip
- Short-term pet care
- Home check if you are away
- Volunteer to wait for delivery or service person if you are away
- Grocery shopping
- Dog walking
- Auto oil change/tire rotation at Newton North High School
Technology Assistance
- Assistance with DVD players, VCRs, cell phones
- Computer/Internet assistance: Installation, printers, email, upgrades, photo digitizing,Wi-Fi installation
In Home Project/Repairs
- Handyman projects/minor repairs
- Change light bulbs or smoke alarm batteries
- Light housekeeping
- Simple carpentry projects by Newton North High School students
- Trash barrel curbside placement and removal
- Seasonal tasks: Install or take down storm windows or air conditioners
Family Support
- Daily telephone check-in calls
- Reading to members with impaired vision
- Short-term caregiver relief
- Friendly visits
Gardening/Landscaping
- Planting,weeding, hedge trimming & seasonal cleanup
Personal Assistance
- Bill paying assistance
- Organizing and clearing clutter
- Help in understanding and completing insurance forms
- Assistance in understanding vendor contracts
Vendor Provided Services
Newton at Home can refer members to local vendors who have been checked for safety and reliability. Vendors provide the kinds of services that volunteers cannot perform and for which members must pay. Some examples are: complex carpentry, chimney cleaning, piano tuning, plumbing, roofing, regular snow removal, tree care/removal, painting, gutter cleaning, electrical work, furniture repair, window washing, landscaping, lamp repair, catering, and home renovations.
Members are encouraged to call the office with any vendor request as we have successfully linked members to many other types of quality vendors. We subscribe to vendor evaluation services and have access to their recommendations.
Many vendors provide a 10-percent discount to NAH members.
